ONLINE COURSES - DISCOVERY God has given us a great big world to be born into and our mandate is to explore it, discover everything we can about it, and enjoy it in a way that is fashioned after his methods – he loves his creation. To do a good job, we need to discover everything we can about him, about his challenge to us to join in saving his world, and about how to do that with others. At Sahali Fellowship, therefore, we offer the following discovery training opportunities. . Email discovery@sahalifellowship.com for materials and to discover faith content by emailing with the pastors. 1. Discover Jesus – who is he and what did he come here for? Either Jesus is who he says he is or he is a demented liar. Explore how Jesus is God, how he lived and why that is important, and the purpose behind his death and resurrection. Explore also what all that has to do with you. Recommended reading preparation is the gospel of Matthew and “First Steps.”
2. Discover Church – what is it really and how does it fit into religion? It seems the church has become a large organization that needs a lot of money to stay in business rather than a family of support and encouragement. Sad thing, that. Explore the church and, since it is God’s idea to have it, what it should look like. Recommended reading preparation is I & II Corinthians.
3. Discover Baptism – why all the emphasis on this water ritual? Some get sprinkled, some get poured, some get dunked. Explore the reason Jesus instituted baptism for our benefit and the value of it to your life. Recommended reading preparation is the booklet on baptism.
4. Discover Communion – do we actually have to eat flesh and drink blood? Sometimes called the Lord’s Supper or the Last Supper or Mass. Communion uses physical elements to empower the participant with spiritual reality. Explore the depths of communing with God. Recommended reading preparation is a handout on sacramental theology by Laura Smit.
5. Discover Sahali Fellowship Vision – what drives us as a local church? Each congregation has their own passion and purpose and perspective on life and God and the connection between the two. To be an effective active participant in the family of God, the local church, explore the dynamics of that family. Recommended reading preparation our vision booklet and the Sahali Fellowship website.
6. Discover Sahali Fellowship Values – what is REALLY important? Values are often compared to feathers on an arrow – they help to ensure going straight toward the goal. Explore the key things we consider necessary to be true to what God is calling us to be. Recommended reading preparation is our vision & values booklet.
7. Discover Reformed Faith – is a denomination really of any value? Sahali Fellowship is part of the Christian Reformed Church. Explore the important principles – The Bible as God’s only word, Jesus as the only Savior, Grace as the only way to salvation, Faith as the only access, etc. Recommended reading preparation is Reformed creeds & Confessions and the booklet “What it Means to be Reformed”.
8. Discover Worship – what goes on and why should I participate? Worship is what I give to God. He does so much for me that when I worship I honor him. It is not about me and what I get; but rather, about what I bring to him. Explore the components of worship and the reasons for each. Recommended reading preparation includes Psalms 90-100; 145-150 and the booklet “When You Worship With Us.”
9. Discover Membership – what are the implications of belonging? The Bible counts God’s people. The church is instructed to bind people to God’s family. Explore the reasons and implications of membership. Recommended reading preparation is “Church Membership and You.”
10. Discover Bible – is this book really as important as people say it is? Explore reasons to believe that the Bible is actually God speaking as well as practical means of using that Word for daily inspiration. Recommended reading preparation is the brochure “Bible – 4 Questions.”
11. Discover Prayer – how can one talk to what seems like nothing there? Most people go to God to ask. Prayer is more dialogue than requests. Explore the simplicity of and personal value of a regular prayer life. Recommended reading preparation is the booklet “Praying the Lord’s Prayer.”
12. Discover Spiritual Gifts – what did God make me good at? The inventor knows his invention best. He knows how he made it and why each part is included. He does not throw in extra parts that are of no help to the function of the invention. God is your inventor. Explore how he put you together so that you that you better understand your purpose. Recommended reading preparation is Discover Your Gifts “added” insights on pages 11 to 47.
13. Discover Finances – isn’t the church really just all about money? Making ends meet is the struggle of most every person and family. Every time you feel like you’re getting somewhere, something happens to throw a glitch into it. Explore God’s financial plan and how it relates to you. Recommended reading preparation is Randy Alcorn’s The Treasure Principle.
14. Discover Fellowship – do I really need another thing to do or go to? People can live quite well these days without social contact. With computers, phones, and drive-thru for everything, we hardly need to see people. Except that we kind of miss connectedness. Explore the Creator’s design of community – the whys and hows of connexion. Recommended reading preparation is the booklet “Belonging.”
15. Discover God’s Mission – what is God up to in the big picture? Everyone wants his or her life to count. Somehow what we do needs to have lasting impact on the world. The way to do that is to participate in the greatest adventure in the universe – God’s. Explore the ways in which you can make an eternal impact in God’s great kingdom. Recommended reading preparation is the book of Acts.
